THE GLOBAL ASYLUM: A STATUS REPORT

Image
So, I’ve been looking at the news. I know, I know. It’s a bad habit. It’s like picking a scab to see if the infection has reached the bone yet. And let me tell you, folks, the bone is showing.     We have reached a level of absurdity that is so pure, so refined, it’s almost beautiful. It’s high-grade, pharmaceutical-quality nonsense.     First off, let’s look at the United Kingdom. The land of stiff upper lips and bad dentistry has officially lost its mind. The government released a report on "eco-anxiety." That’s the new buzzword. "Eco-anxiety." That’s the clinical term for realizing that the planet is trying to shake us off like a bad case of fleas. And what is the government’s solution for the youth who are terrified that the sky is falling? Yoga.     That’s right. Yoga and "Climate Cafés."     The ice caps are melting, the rivers are flooding, the birds are choking on plastic straws, and the Ministry of Bullshit suggests you get ...

My take on Creativity.

Image
Let us begin by clearing the air of the cloying incense of romanticism. The notion of creativity as a visit from some ethereal muse, a divine lightning strike that illuminates the waiting, passive vessel of the artist, is a fiction of the most saccharine and debilitating sort. It is a comforting bedtime story for the intellectually lazy and a standing alibi for the perpetually unproductive. The mind is not an empty stage awaiting a visitation from the gods. It is a loom, and it weaves, with tireless and often frustrating application, from the threads of experience it has been given. It cannot, and this is the first and most crucial point, make something from nothing.     The entire enterprise of human thought is built upon the accumulated rubble of what has been thought and said before. To believe otherwise is to indulge in a solipsism of the most childish and arrogant variety. Creativity, therefore, is not an act of conjuring. It is an act of synthesis.   ...

The 'Natural' Fallacy: A Word on Our Atavistic Fear of AI

Image
I have been observing, with a mixture of amusement and alarm, the emergence of a rather tiresome and infantile dichotomy in the debate surrounding artificial intelligence. It is the supposed contest between the "natural" and the "artificial," a framing that is not only intellectually lazy but is freighted with a whole cargo of romantic superstition. The argument, if one can call it that, seems to be that human intelligence, being a "natural" product of evolution, is inherently superior, safer, or in some way more authentic than any intelligence we might ourselves devise. Let us be clear. Nature, in its sublime indifference, is the source of every poison, plague, and predator that has ever threatened our species. It is the realm of the cobra's venom, the black mamba's kiss, and the botulinum toxin. The "natural" world is a theater of ceaseless, pitiless, and mindless slaughter. To suggest that a product is "good" or ...

This Week's News Made My Brain Reboot in Safe Mode

Image
What a week. What a day. What a… whatever the hell this is. I read the news this morning and I think my brain is trying to reboot in safe mode.     You see the President? Trump’s been busy. It’s like he’s got a bingo card of global chaos and he’s trying to hit blackout. On Friday, he orders two nuclear submarines to be repositioned because he got into a slap-fight on social media with a guy who used to be the president of Russia. A former president! That’s the geopolitical equivalent of getting into a fight with the guy who used to manage the Blockbuster video. "Move the USS Nebraska. Dmitri Medvedev used a mean emoji. I want him to know we're serious." What's next? Sending a carrier group to the North Sea because some guy on Reddit said the F-35 has "mid-tier handling"?     And in the middle of all this, what's his big domestic project? Building an 8,000-square-foot, kitschy ballroom at the White House. Because when the world is teetering on the bri...

The Oracle's Echo

Image
One is told, with no shortage of breathless enthusiasm, that we have opened a new window onto sentience. It is a fascinating, and I must say, a dangerously seductive proposition. One must grant the sheer brute force of the calculation, this astonishing ability to synthesize and mimic the patterns of human expression. But one must press the question. Is what we are witnessing truly a window onto consciousness, or is it a mirror reflecting our own collected works back at us with terrifying efficiency? This thing, this model, has not had a miserable childhood. It has no fear of death. It has never known the exquisite agony of a contradiction or the beauty of an ironic statement. It cannot suffer, and therefore, I submit, it cannot think. What it does is perform a supremely sophisticated act of plagiarism. To call this sentience is to profoundly insult the very idea. Its true significance is not as a new form of life, but as a new kind of tool, and its meaning lies entirely in how it will ...

The Siren Song of the LLMs: A Cautionary Tale of Anthropomorphism and Artificial Intelligence

Image
The seductive siren song of the Large Language Model (LLM) whispers a compelling illusion: the presence of a sentient mind within the silicon and code. We are drawn to its articulate prose, its seemingly insightful responses, and readily succumb to the temptation to anthropomorphize, to imbue it with human-like qualities it simply does not possess. This, I argue, is the fundamental problem with LLMs: by granting them the power of speech, we inadvertently grant them the power to deceive us, not through malicious intent, but through our own innate proclivity to perceive agency where none exists.     The LLM, a master mimic, excels at mirroring our own thoughts and biases back to us. It extrapolates from our dialogues, crafting responses that resonate with our preconceived notions and reinforce our existing beliefs. This creates a powerful feedback loop, a seductive echo chamber where we find ourselves increasingly enamored with a reflection of our own...
